Teacher of the Year 2009-2010, Tiffani Slaughter
My name is Tiffani Slaughter; I am the oldest of three children and single mother of LaTia Slaughter. As a child of an educator my life has always been filled with fun, joyous and educationally enriches experiences. This is one of the joys that I try to pass along to my students a “Love for Learning”. My love for education began long before my teaching career. While in high school I was a member of the Future Teacher of America Organization. For three summers I worked as a teacher’s assistant for the Lil Prince and Princess Daycare. I also worked part time for the North Forest American Federation of Teachers. By the time I entered college, my major was clear, education would be my path. My Bachelors degree is in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood. While in college I became a substitute teacher. Following graduation, I received several job offers but I chose to apply and work in the North Forest Independent School District, where I have enjoyed working for the past six years. I began under the leadership of Mr. Benjamin Petteway as a Kindergarten teacher. Following this assignment, I was move to second grade which became my new love. I taught second grade for two years and was grade chairperson for one year. During this time I was able to create team unity, horizontal discipline elimination and grade level intervention. Following this assignment I became the Science Lab teacher where I have remained for the past three years. This assignment has allowed me to enhance my career in so many ways. I have been a member of the Region 4 Science Collaborative 2007-2008, now I am an instructional team member for the Region 4 Science Collaborative. Along with this I am a collaborative intern for the Rice University Regional Collaborative. On my campus I strive to be a useful resource for everyone students, teachers, and parents. By tutoring and providing intervention in Science, organizing and facilitating our annual campus Science Fair. I also plan and organize Science Month on our campus, which, consist of a month filled with fun, engaging activities and competitions. In addition to this I have an Annual Family Science Night and Parent Make and Take workshops. To prepare for T.A.K.S. we have an annual Science Camp, which has been very successful. While leading our Science department we have scored 56% in 2006, 62% in 2007 and 97% in 2008 on the T.A.K.S. Test. Recently I received the great honor of being selected Lakewood Elementary Teacher of the year. This allowed me to compete and win for the North Forest Independent School District teacher of the year.
