  • Chinese Full Moon Festival
  • The Chinese celebrated the Chinese Full Moon Festival this year on September 25th, 2007.

  • The Chinese Full Moon Festival is on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. It's also known as the Mid-autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie). It is a day of family reunions much like a Western Thanksgiving. Chinese people believe that on that day, the moon is the roundest and brightest signaling a time of completeness and abundance. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, children are delighted to stay up past midnight, parading multi-colored lanterns into the wee hours as families take to the streets or city parks to moon-gaze. It is also a romantic night for lovers, who sit holding hands on hilltops, riverbanks and park benches, captivated by the brightest moon of the year.

  • The moon cake (dessert) is the food for the Moon Festival. The Chinese eat the moon cake at night with the full moon in the sky.

  • North Forest ISD nurse came to Lakewood Elementary School on November 13th-14th, 2007 to conduct hearing and eyes tests for all the Lakewood students.

  • Free Smoke Detectors!
  • Under the coordination of the PE teacher Ms. Young, the Houston Fire Department came to Lakewood Elementary School on November 28th, 2007 and distributed hundreds of free smoke detectors to students as well as the parents. A big shout out goes to Ms. Young and the Houston Fire Department for making the Lakewood community a safer place to live!

  • Lakewood Elementary School initiated the first annual Unwrap a Gift and Read on December 4th, 2007. The event was a great success! Each student received a brand new book to read over the holidays. Each faculty & staff also went to a different grade level to read his/her favorite book to the students!

  • In celebration of College/Career Week during the week of January 28th, 2008, Junior Achievement came to Lakewood Elementary School on January 30th, 2008 to teach students about different careers in the society.
  • February Events
    Chinese New Year (Year of the Rat)!
  • The Asian communities celebrated Chinese New Year on February 7th, 2008. This year, it is also known as the year of the rat. In China, the Rat is respected and considered a courageous, enterprising person. It is deemed an honor to be born in the Year of the Rat and it is considered a privilege to be associated with a Rat. Rats know exactly where to find solutions and can take care of themselves and others without problems. They use their instinctive sense of observation to help others in times of need and are among the most fit of all the Animal signs to survive most any situation. Chinese New Year occurs on January 1st according the Chinese lunar calendar. In the American calendar, that is usually sometimes in February. Chinese New Year last a total of 15 days.

  • During Chinese New Year, families get together for a big feast, just like the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Adults and children wear beautiful clothing to watch lion dance, dragon dance, eat traditional Chinese food, and play traditional games. Adults and children also play with the firecrackers. The loud noise made by the firecracker is used to get rid of the evil spirit. Most importantly, the adults pass out red envelopes known as “hong bow” to children that are filled with money. The redness represents a sign of good luck and wealth. Families eat sweet rice ball soup, a type of dessert to mark the last day of the Chinese New Year. Happy Chinese New Year!

  • In celebration of Black History Month, top restaurant owner Marcus Davis went to PE teacher Ms. Young's class to speak to the students on February 12th, 2008. He owns The Breakfast Klub www.thebreakfastklub.com/ The restaurant was named one of the top 10 restaurants in the United States. Mr. Davis talked to the students the importance of education, vision, and believe in yourself.

  • 5th grade graduation was held on May 30th, 2008. Congratulations to all the 5th grade students!

  • 4th grade students received their awards during the Award’s Day on June 4th, 2008.
  • Principal Purvis, the Clown!
  • On Thursday, June 5th, 2008 the parents, staff members and students of Lakewood Elementary School celebrated the preliminary T.A.K.S. results by participating in a Principal’s Fun Day. The staff prepared food, provided water slides and fun activities for all. The children had a great time. The Principal had promised the students that he would wear a clown suit if they did exceptionally well on the T.A.K.S. test. Preliminary results determined his fate. He wore the clown suit and everyone had a good laugh. Mr. Purvis stated “We are so serious about our children’s future that we sometimes forget to balance our lives with laughter/fun, and that is why I made and kept the promise to wear the clown suit.”

  • Summer school students made bird houses in Science Lab during the week of June 9th, 2008.

  • During summer school, 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Stanford taught Kindergarten and 3 grade students how to make a volcano. She also demonstrated the process of how a volcano erupts.

  • During summer school, 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Stanford taught 3rd grade students the process to make vanilla ice cream using ice cubes and rock salt.
