August Events
  • On August 19th, 2006, CARE (Chinese American Relief Effort) non-profit organization distributed over 850+ school supplies to every Lakewood student. The attendees included Dr. James Simpson (Superintendent), Allen Provost (Vice President of the Board), Rodney Louis (Elementary Director of Curriculum and Instruction), Sher-Min Chow (news anchor for Channel 11), and Senfronia Thompson (State Representative). Performances included Shaolin Kung Fu demonstration, Three Little Pigs play done by 2nd grade students, and dance performances done by Lakewood Dancing Dolls (1st grade students). The event was a huge success! Thanks to all the teachers, staff, CARE volunteers, and other Asian organizations with the donation process throughout the summer time!

  • September Events
  • This year’s Goal’s Night was held on September 7th, 2006. The event was a success! Many of the parents attended the event to get an in-depth understanding of this year’s goals and policies at Lakewood Elementary School.
  • Lakewood Elementary School celebrated Grandparents Day on September 8th, 2006. Many grandparents enjoyed a day of luncheon with their grandchildren during lunch time!
  • Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month!
  • Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th, and ends on October 15th, the anniversary of Independence for five Latin American countries- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico achieved independence on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month is very important to the millions of Hispanic and Latino citizens across the United States. It is a time for celebrations of cultural heritage and strong family traditions. This is also an important time for all Americans to remember all of the contributions Hispanic-Americans have made to our country.
  • CARE Appreciation!
  • The board members and the superintendent of North Forest Independent School District awarded Peter Hwang (CARE organizer) and Nancy Chang (CARE president) a certificate of appreciation during the board meeting on September 18th, 2006 at Shadydale Elementary School. This year, CARE (Chinese American Relief Effort) has donated over $14,000 worth of school supplies to over 850+ students at Lakewood Elementary School. In addition, they also donated a state of art PA system to allow faculty and staff to use in the cafeteria. Lakewood community wants to thank the CARE organization that made these donations possible!
  • Educational Learning Tools!
  • An anonymous donor donated each 3rd grade teacher 10 Leap Frog Pads. All 4th and 5th grade teachers received 5 Leap Frog Pads each. Both 1st and 2nd grade chair teachers received 5 Leap Frogs each. Math Coach, Reading First Coach, and Science Coach all received 5 Leap Frog Pads each. All Pre-K and Kindergarten teachers received 6 Baby Einstein videos each. The Beanie Babies were given to the school counselors and the assistant principal. Lakewood Elementary School appreciates the anonymous donor graciously!

  • The Kindergarten teachers held a Parent/Teacher Tea on October 5th, 2006 in the library. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness in the children’s education and parent involvement for all the Kindergarten parents. The event was a success! Many parents attended the event!
  • Chinese Full Moon Festival
  • The Chinese celebrated the Chinese Full Moon Festival this year on October 6th, 2006.

  • The Chinese Full Moon Festival is on the 15th of the 8th lunar month. It's also known as the Mid-autumn Festival (Zhong Qiu Jie). It is a day of family reunions much like a Western Thanksgiving. Chinese people believe that on that day, the moon is the roundest and brightest signaling a time of completeness and abundance. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, children are delighted to stay up past midnight, parading multi-colored lanterns into the wee hours as families take to the streets or city parks to moon-gaze. It is also a romantic night for lovers, who sit holding hands on hilltops, riverbanks and park benches, captivated by the brightest moon of the year.

  • The moon cake (dessert) is the food for the Moon Festival. The Chinese eat the moon cake at night with the full moon in the sky.

  • Lakewood students participated in the drug rally on October 10th, 2006 to show support of a drug free society!

    Family Math Night- “Math Mania”
  • The Family Math Night was a hands-on learning experience for parents and students. There were activities that covered all six TAKS objectives on various grade levels (Pre-K to 5th). All activites were stationed according to objective. As an incentive, there were prizes given away for completing different task. We also had four information booths: Math with Technology, Math Literature, Math Resources and Test Taking Strategies. Overall, the Family Math Night was a HUGE success!!! Thanks to all of the staff, parents, and students that helped to make Math Night a special event. Remember, Lakewood Mathematics: "We are Exemplary Bound, You can Count on it!" The Family Math Night was held on October 19th, 2006.

  • Indian communities celebrated Diwali (Festival of Lights) on October 21st, 2006. Deepavali (Diwali) is a festival where people from all age groups participate. They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting near and dear ones to their households for partaking in a sumptuous feast.

  • In celebration of the drug awareness month, a drug free parade was held on October 25th, 2006 around Lakewood Elementary School for all grade levels. The parade was led by the PE teacher, Ms. Young.

  • A group of Smiley High School drama students performed a play called “Hansel and Gretel” to all Lakewood students on December 1st, 2006. The performance was a success. The students enjoyed the play!

  • The Fine Arts Department of North Forest ISD presented a group of musicians that played Christmas jazz music to 3rd-5th grade students on December 6th, 2006. Many students enjoyed the music!

  • Visitors came to the Lakewood Career Day on January 24th, 2007 to talk to 3rd-5th grade students about the aspects of their careers. The event was a great success. Many students were able to understand the aspects of different careers.

  • Pre-K to 2nd grade students showed support to 3rd-5th grade students on their TAKS tests by showing signs, chants, and slogans at the TAKS rally on February 14th, 2007.

  • District Training Sessions
  • The North Forest I.S.D. technology department conducted training sessions for district employees during the weeks of (2/19-23/07) and (2/26-3/5/07) on the Lakewood Elementary School campus. Mr. Don Green and Mr. Greg Murray along with the technical experts that comprise the North Forest team facilitated the training on the newly acquired pentamation system. This system is scheduled be used next school year.
  • Soul Food!
  • In celebration of Black History for the month of February, soul food was served at Lakewood Elementary School on February 23rd, 2007 during lunch time for all the teachers/staff members to enjoy! Thanks to all the teachers and staff members that made the luncheon possible!

  • The Chinese New Year Event was held on March 9th, 2007 in celebration of the Chinese New Year (the year of pig).

  • The objective of the event was to promote appreciation in Asian culture. There were various performances/games such as traditional Chinese dance, Chinese song, lion dance, writing Chinese names in Chinese calligraphy, folding papers, making Chinese lanterns, learning to use chopsticks, passing out red envelopes (lucky money), and fortune cookies.

  • Pastor Quincy Jackson supports the Lakewood Lions TAKS Testing efforts by donating funds to purchase water and nutritious food items for the students. Pastor Jackson represents the N.F.I.S.D. Ministers Alliance and is very active in the collaborative union between the school and the community.
