  • TAKS Rally!
  • 1st grade students showed support to 3rd-5th grade students on their TAKS tests by showing signs, chants, and slogans at the TAKS rally.
  • March Events
    Chinese New Year Performance!

  • The Chinese New Year Event was held on March 10th, 2006 in celebration of the Chinese New Year (the year of dog).

  • The objective of the event was to promote appreciation in Asian culture. There were various performances/games such as traditional Chinese dance, Chinese song, lion dance, writing Chinese names in Chinese calligraphy, folding papers, making Chinese lanterns, learning to use chopsticks, passing out red envelopes (lucky money), and fortune cookies.

  • The event was a huge success. A big shout out goes to Michael Lo (first grade teacher) and Katherine Chang (Houston Event Planning) who made the event possible!

  • During the Spring Break from March 13th-17th, 2006, the Lakewood Dancing dolls won 1st place National Championship from the American Cheer Power National Dance competition held in Moody Garden, Galveston. Each of the girls also received a National Championship jacket along with a National Championship gold medal. The 1st grade dancers are Tatyana Toliver, Cassie Dickerson, Taylor Green, Arriya Garrett, Diamond Jones, and Johnsha Scott. Cassandra Templeton, the 5th grade teacher sponsored the Lakewood Dancing Dolls.

  • Reading Rodeo Winners!
  • Students from Kindergarten to 2nd grades won first place, second place, third place, and fourth place trophies from the Reading Rodeo competition at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School on May 4th, 2006!
  • Larry Hicks, Sherrise Johnson, Nydea Ortega, and Yvan Mfinyum, Kindergarten students won a second place trophy in the Dramatic Reading category for the Reading Rodeo!

  • Kay Branch, De'Aundre Minger, Nichole Perez, Corey Jones, Shucrystal Robertson, Datrevion Singletary, Oswanel Reed, and Kierra Thompson, Kindergarten students won a second place trophy in the Story Time Comes Alive category for the Reading Rodeo!
  • Tatyana Toliver, 1st grade student won a third place trophy in the Storytelling category for the Reading Rodeo!
  • She'a Rax, Eli Munoz, Geovanna Torres, Edshina Fonteneauy, J'ceon Teamer, and Benjamin Mitchell, 1st grade students won a second place trophy in the Story Time Comes Alive category for the Reading Rodeo!

  • On May 25th, 2006 at the 5th grade Award’s Day, seven students won cash rewards for writing essays and drawings about China sponsored by the CARE (Chinese American Relief Effort) organization. Anaisa Arzola (5th grade student) won 1st place in the essay writing titled “Let’s Celebrate!” Raquel Alvarez (5th grade student) won 2nd place in the essay writing titled “China, A Beautiful Country”. Sandra Cortez (5th grade student) won 3rd place in the essay writing titled “The Great China”. Christopher Rivas (4th grade student) won 3rd place as well in the essay writing titled “My Chinese Experience”. Nancy Bernabe (5th grade student) won 4th place in the essay writing titled “A Taste of Chinese.”

  • Tavarus Woods (5th grade student) won 1st place art drawing of Chinese symbol. Nancy Salinas (5th grade student) won 2nd place art drawing of Chinese symbol. Congratulations to all the winners!

    CARE (Chinese American Relief Effort) Kick-Off Event!
  • CARE (Chinese Relief Effort) organization held a kick-off fund raising event on June 10th, 2006 at Chinese Community Center to start off the donation process to raise money needed for the school supplies of Lakewood Elementary students. The persons were there are Peter Hwang (CARE fund raising chair), Ms. Templeton (5th grade teacher), part of Lakewood Dancing Dolls (Cassie Dickerson, Arriya Garrett, and Tatyana Toliver), and Nancy Chang (CARE President).

  • July Events
  • CARE (Chinese American Relief Effort) organization held their Fourth of July celebration/fund raising event on July 1st, 2006 from 3:00 to 9:30 at R&R Ranch to help raise money to buy school supplies to every Lakewood Elementary School student. The event was a huge success. Approximately 400 to 500 hundred peopled attended the event. Thank you very much to Nancy Chang (CARE President) and Peter Hwang (CARE fund raising Chair) that made the event possible!
