|
In Ms. McConnell’s Social Studies class, 5th grade students learned about different Pueblo Indian tribes. The students studied Tigua Indians of Texas. The Tigua Indians are the only Puebloan tribe still in Texas.
The Tigua are the only Puebloan tribe still in Texas. The Pueblos are a number of different Indian tribes who lived in the southwest. The southwest includes far west Texas, New Mexico, Arizona with bits of southern Colorado and Utah. All these different Puebloan tribes shared similar ways of living, even though they spoke different languages and had slightly different cultures. Other Puebloan tribes in Texas include the long gone prehistoric Pueblos along the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle and probably the Jumano.

The front side of the School Coin
Our school is Lakewood Elementary, located in the northeast section of Harris County. Built in 1962 on a four and a half acres of scenic property, it is one of the elementary schools of the North Forest Independent School District.
At the center of the coin is our school mascot - the lion, an animal known for its majesty, courage, and bravery. At Lakewood, we are just like lions, majestic in our confidence that with the quality of education the school and the staff are offering, we will have the courage and the bravery to face the challenges that life presents in the future.
The flip side of the School Coin
The map of Texas represents that Lakewood Elementary is an integral part of the State of Texas in its quest for a better future through quality education.
A picture of children of different races joined in hands as they embrace the world represents unity in diversity, which is much celebrated in our school. The ethnicity of Lakewood’s population is 57% Hispanic, 42% African American, and 1% other races.
The books represent the focus we have in school, directing our experiences and preparing us to develop academic and behavioral skills, which will enable us to achieve excellence in performance.
The computer and microscope represent our adherence to science and technology, to reach excellence by developing the essential scientific and technological skills at our maximum learning potential.
The paw prints represent our marks as we aim high to meet the mandated state standards for excellent education.
Our campus slogan is “Whatever it Takes, We Educate!” However difficult the path may be, we will get the education we so deserve.
Our school spirit colors are purple and gold. Purple symbolizes royalty whereas gold symbolizes richness in values and goodness. At Lakewood, we are the kings’ children and are taught and molded to be good citizens, rich in values and goodness. We are valued and won’t be left behind.
